Opinions Revisited

As stated before, I like to read what people say when they send their opinions to the newspapers. I like to see if they have anything useful to say, if they're biased in anyway, or if they are just off their rockers. What I see is that a lot of people don't know what they are talking about when they write things.

Today for example, I read a good one in the Salt Lake Tribune. A couple submitted this one on the topic of proposition 8 and gay marriage (the title is Clanging Symbols). They have a son who is gay and a good person. No problem with that. It is what else they said that got me.

They stated that "Homosexuality can't be 'overcome'" as has been suggested. They continue "Certainly, it is not a choice, so it is not a sin." Where do they get these ideas? How is homosexuality not a choice?

The best part is this: "No wonder that . . . the 'religious' have become 'a clanging cymbal' as Paul says in 1 Corinthians. (By the way, they put symbol instead of cymbal. Also the reference says tinkling cymbal 1 Cor 13:1). How can they quote (or misquote) Paul like this, acting like good Christians, and still say that homosexuality is not a sin? They call those of us who stand up for what God says in the Bible "a tinkling cymbal"? Do they not read all of the Bible? Why were Sodom and Gomorrah destroyed? Because of wickedness, mainly homosexuality.

I guess I just don't get how people think. Maybe i'm wrong in what I have said here, but I just had to get it out of my system (which is the purpose of my blog).

Grateful

I am so grateful for the life and example of Elder Wirthlin. He was such a great man. I loved his quiet ways and his simple talk. He just moved me. I find it hard to see him as a football player though. He is so gentle.

In his last talk, I could feel his love for the Savior and for us as people. He wanted us to know that too. I loved the theme of that talk as well. "Come What May, and Love It." Such great advice doesn't come very often in this world. He was a great shining example for all of us, and he will be sorely missed.

I bet his family is grateful for this last talk, being they have to let it come and love it. Luckily, the truth of the gospel will always be there for all of us to love whatever comes in our lives. We just have to make the best of it.

Goodbye Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin. Enjoy the rest of your journey.

Opinions

I have to start this one off by saying that I am grateful that people have opinions, and that they express them. Free speech should always be allowed. That being said. . . .

There are some people out there who use this right too often and push it to the extreme. I have this habit and strange obsession of reading what people have to say, especially when it comes to those people who comment on something a sports writer has written. Everybody has their team and they support their team, but they think that team is better than all the rest at everything! Not one person could tell them any different. A nice peaceful debate and argument becomes a fight with name calling, rude behavior, and a total loss of all commen sense. After a period of time, these become nothing but plain stupidity. It just drives me nuts.

I know, this blog could probably fall within this category, but I feel that I don't fall to that level. If I do, let me know.

Sociology

Today in Sociology we had a group assignment, and we were supposed to debate a controversial issue. The winning side, as decided by the teacher, would get the participation points. The losing side would have to do a different assignment to get the same points. Okay, this would be okay if we got to choose our position, but we got assigned to a side because of where we sat. I was assigned to what I considered the losing side (I am writing this post in class before the outcome). I don't see how a teacher can make us do something to get participation points when we participated, probably more so because we were on the losing side. We wanted it more, but because the other side had a better arguement, they will get the points. I just don't get it.

Response to opinion. . .

I was reading in the Deseret News this morning, and I came across something that irked me. In the opinion section, there was a guy that was dogging on soccer. He stated that with Real Salt Lake winning now, he almost felt like jumping on the bandwagon. His reason for not doing so, which I'm glad he is not a bandwagon fan, is that he hates soccer. He states that he hates soccer because a team can advance in the playoffs with a tie.

What kind of a stupid reason is that? At least the MLS has playoffs. I am refering to college football, mainly the BCS system, which is totally crazy. How can you crown a champion, a number one team, without giving all the top teams a chance to prove that they are worthy of that title? The rankings for the BCS are completely messed up, especially with human opinion a big part of the ranking system. Then you throw in the fact that some conferences get an automatic bid, no matter how bad they are, and you get the feel for why I am upset. Where does this guy get off criticizing the most widely played sport in the world when they actually have playoffs?

Anyway, I just thought I would stick up for my sport and my team.

New to blogging

So I am just new to this whole blogging thing, but I am giving it a try. Mostly this one is for me to rant about things that are on my mind. I don't get a lot of opportunity to do this, and I don't really care if anybody knows what I think, so this is the perfect place to do this. If you are reading this, welcome. If you come back, that is your choice.
